Gaurikund is the cornerstone of the trek of 16kms to the sacred pilgrimage site of Lord Kedarnath. It is perched at an elevation of 1,982 metres above sea level. The place and its temple is dedicated to the goddess Parvati, wife of lord Shiva and also named after it.
Legend has it that it is the same place where goddess Parvati used to do penance and involving ascetics and yoga practices to win the heart of her husband, lord Shiva. It is said that lord Shiva accepted the marriage proposal of goddess Parvati here and married her in Trijuginarayan. This place is also related to the story of beheading Lord Ganesha and how he got the elephant’s head. It is said that once goddess Parvati was taking bath and told lord Ganesha to guard the door. Lord ganesha did the same as his mother told him and didn’t let lord shiva enter the kund. Lord shiva got furiously angry and he chopped the head of lord Ganesha. But after when goddess parvati insisted it was replaced by the head of an elephant. The lake is also called as ‘Parvati Sarovar’.
The place provides vivid greenery with the Vasuki Ganga flowing downstream. It is located between the lush green forest offering a pleasant atmosphere and panoramic view. It is situated at a distance of 28kms from Ukhimath and 6 Kms from Sonprayag.

It is perched at an elevation of 3,584kms above sea level and is situated at a distance of 16kms from Gaurikund. This sacred temple was established by Adi shankaracharya. It is the main temple of Panch Kedar and one of the 12 Jyotirlingas.
The place is easily approachable through roadways. If one wants to reach via airways or railways, they have to reach Rishikesh or Dehradun first and then start their further journey. The weather of this place is cloudy and pleasant during day time. One should carry light woollen clothes and a flashlight would also good option.
